Job summary We are seeking a skilled and compassionate Phlebotomist to join our healthcare team. The successful candidate will be responsible for collecting blood samples from patients safely and efficiently, ensuring high-quality patient care and adherence to infection control standards and assisting in gp led clinics within the practice. Main duties of the job Perform venepuncture and capillary sampling for a variety of diagnostic tests. Accurately label and process blood specimens for laboratory analysis. Ensure patient comfort and confidentiality at all times. Maintain accurate records and documentation. Adhere to all infection prevention, health, and safety procedures. Work collaboratively with clinicians, nurses, and laboratory staff. Assist with gp led clinics within the practice. Assist with administrative and stock management duties where required. There may be, on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks. This will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels: a. Obtaining patient consent for the collection of a blood sample b. Performing venepuncture in accordance with practice protocols c. Maintaining accurate patient records on the clinical IT system and ensuring specimens are ready for onward transportation d. The correct labelling, packaging and storing of samples e. Effective use of the specimen log, resolving any discrepancies f. Ensuring samples are sent to the laboratory in a timely manner g. Maintaining effective liaison with the NHS Trust laboratory staff h. Working collaboratively with the nursing team, seeking guidance when necessary for patient related matters i. Being an integral part of the general practice team j. Acting as a chaperone as required k. Ensuring clinical waste is removed from clinical areas and sharps bins replaced in accordance with the organisations IPC Policy l. Working within national and local protocols where these exist m. Be aware of duties and responsibilities regarding current legislation and adhere to practice policies and procedures on safeguarding adults and safeguarding children n. Supporting the administrative team on an as-required basis o. Undertaking all mandatory training and induction programmes p. Contributing to and embracing the spectrum of clinical governance q. Maintaining a clean, tidy, effective working area at all times Attending a formal appraisal with their manager at least every 12 months. Once a performance/training objective has been set, progress will be reviewed on a regular basis so that new objectives can be agreed.
