Examples of duties MAJOR DUTIES Operates a variety of pumps, ladders, hoses, and other equipment at the scene of fire, rescue and other emergency incidents. Completes required reports detailing fire, emergency medical, and other incident responses. Completes required training and maintains required certifications. Inspects equipment to ensure that it is in proper working order; washes and cleans equipment on a regular basis; repairs and performs routine maintenance on equipment; ensures the proper functioning of all equipment and vehicles. Maintains an adequate inventory of supplies aboard vehicles; conducts regular inspections. Provides fire prevention information to the public; assists in teaching fire safety classes; provides tours of the fire station. Performs housekeeping, grounds keeping, and building maintenance duties. Conducts station and apparatus tours for school and other community groups. Participates in public education events. Conducts pre-incident planning on commercial and residential structures as requested. Inspects and services fire hydrants. Assists with fire investigations to determine cause and origin of fires. Performs related duties. Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Firefighter: Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education. Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Florida for the type of vehicle or equipment operated. Ability to meet current requirements set forth by the Florida Bureau of Fire Standards and Training Possession of or ability to readily obtain Florida Certified Firefighter II certification. Current CPR certification. Possession of or ability to acquire appropriate state EMT certification within one year of hire. PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT The work is typically performed intermittently sitting, standing, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell. The work is typically performed in an office, except while at fire or other emergency scenes. The employee may be exposed to machinery with moving parts, irritating chemicals, extreme temperatures, hazardous situations, and inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective clothing and devices.
